Moving Widget Workouts to Exercises
If you already have a big library of widget-based workouts, you do not need to rebuild everything from scratch. You can migrate gradually, keep clients training, and update one template at a time.
Sequence does not currently have a one-click “convert widgets to exercises” action. You migrate by adding exercises into your existing workout, keeping the widgets that still add value, and removing only the widgets you no longer need.
What Exercises Replace vs What Widgets Still Do Best
Use exercises for structured set tracking. Keep widgets for custom tracking that is not set-based.
| Move to exercises | Keep as widgets |
|---|---|
| Set structure (multiple sets) | Logbook entries |
| Weight/load tracking | Slider ratings (effort, mood, readiness) |
| Reps tracking | Select choices |
| Duration-based sets and holds | Custom non-set checks and notes |
| Rest between sets/exercises | Any metric that is not part of set execution |
A Safe Migration Workflow for Coaches
Pick one coaching workout template first
Start with one high-use coaching workout instead of your whole library.
Duplicate that template
Open the coaching workout and use Duplicate so you have:
- a legacy version your current clients already know
- a new version for exercise-based structure
This avoids unexpected changes across active planners while you test.
Add exercises alongside existing widgets
In the new version, add exercises first (sets, weight, reps, duration, rest). Keep existing widgets in place while you validate the flow. You can run both in the same workout.
Remove only the widgets you no longer need
Once exercises cover the structured tracking, remove only overlapping widgets. Keep logbook/slider/select widgets if they still capture useful data.
Roll out to clients on future dates
Assign the migrated version to upcoming planner dates. Leave in-progress or current-week sessions on the legacy template if you do not want to change those sessions mid-block.
Choose linked vs unlinked intentionally
When you add a coaching workout to a client, decide whether it stays linked:
- Linked: future template edits sync to that client copy
- Unlinked: that client copy stays independent
If you want to avoid surprise updates to existing linked workouts, keep the original template live and schedule the migrated copy as a separate workout.
Editing a coaching workout can affect linked client workouts. If you are unsure, duplicate first and roll out the migrated version as a new template.
Web vs Mobile (Current Reality)
Coaches manage this migration workflow on web:
- edit coaching workout templates
- add exercises and widgets in the same workout
- duplicate templates before rollout
- assign workouts as linked or unlinked
Suggested Rollout Pattern
- Migrate your top 5 templates first.
- Use the migrated versions for all new planning blocks.
- Keep legacy templates only where clients are mid-cycle.
- Retire legacy templates once they are no longer scheduled.
Next Steps
- Coaching Workouts — Build and assign workouts to clients
- Exercises — Configure exercise categories and set tracking
- Widgets — Keep non-set tracking where it still helps
