theCrag

Connect theCrag to import your outdoor ascents into Sequence. Each day you climbed becomes a completed Outdoor Climbing session, with your routes and boulders added to your logbooks. You need an active theCrag Supporter account, and you set up the connection on the web.

Connecting theCrag

Create an API key

On thecrag.com, go to Settings → API Keys and create a key. Copy it.

Open Integrations

In Sequence, go to Settings → Integrations and find the theCrag section.

Paste your key and choose an import period

Paste your key, then choose how far back to import: Complete history, Previous 12 months (the default), Previous 90 days, or From today.

Connect

Click Connect theCrag. Sequence checks your key and starts the first sync.

Your key is stored encrypted and isn’t shown again after you connect.

How Syncing Works

Sequence syncs once a day, and again when you open the Planner if it’s been more than 12 hours since the last sync. After the first import, each sync only fetches ascents that are new or changed since the last one. You’ll see the time of the next sync under Next automatic sync in Settings → Integrations.

To sync straight away, click Sync now in Settings → Integrations, or click the ⋯ menu in the Planner and select Sync theCrag. The Planner menu item also shows when you last synced and whether something needs attention. Manual sync is limited to once every 10 minutes.

theCrag gives each account a weekly API budget. A Complete history import uses more of it on the first sync. If the budget runs out, automatic syncing pauses for a few days and then resumes on its own.

What Gets Imported

Each ascent becomes a logbook entry with the route or boulder name, grade, crag, tick style, and your ascent comment as notes. Boulders go to your Boulder logbook and everything else to your Route logbook. Trad routes are flagged Trad.

Grades are matched by name against Sequence’s grades. If theCrag’s grade doesn’t match one, the ascent is skipped.

All ascents from the same day go into one completed Outdoor Climbing session. If you’ve already scheduled an outdoor workout for that day and haven’t completed it, ascents are added to that session instead. This works when the workout includes the matching logbook and isn’t archived or from a coach, so you can plan an outdoor day ahead and the import fills it in.

Skipped Ascents

After each sync, Settings → Integrations shows how many ascents were imported, updated, and skipped. Click Show skipped details to see which ascents were skipped and why. Ascents are skipped when they’re:

  • Indoor
  • A tick type Sequence can’t map
  • A grade Sequence can’t match
  • Climbed before your chosen import period
  • Already up to date in Sequence
  • Previously deleted in Sequence

Editing and Deleting Imports

If you edit an ascent on theCrag, the next sync updates the entry in Sequence. Deleting an ascent on theCrag doesn’t remove it from Sequence. If you delete an imported entry in Sequence, later syncs won’t import it again.

If theCrag Stops Accepting Your Key

Settings → Integrations shows a message, and automatic syncing stops. Disconnect, create a new key on thecrag.com under Settings → API Keys, and connect again.

Disconnecting theCrag

Go to Settings → Integrations, click Disconnect in the theCrag section, and confirm. Sequence deletes your API key and stops syncing. Sessions and logbook entries you’ve already imported stay in Sequence.

If you connect again later, ascents you deleted in Sequence are imported again if they’re still on theCrag and fall within the import period you choose.
